Budget Crisis

So, back in early 2007, we filed our 2006 Ohio income tax return. We didn't owe anything at that time, so we figured that everything was great.

Well, in 2008, as we were filing out 2007 Ohio income tax return, we realized that we had taken a tax credit on our 2006 return, and therefore filed a 2006 amended return and sent the state a check for $74 dollars. A few months later, we received a letter saying that we owed the state $74 since they entered in our amended return, however, we had already sent them a check. We finally sorted it out and realized that when they got the check they issued a refund back to us because they hadn't yet processed the amended return. Anyhow, we had it all sorted out...or so we thought. This happened a couple more times that year. We would get a notice saying we owed or they were giving us the money back and we called to sort it out. Eventually we had to send them a letter with all of our documentation to get it straightened away and to make sure they realized that we did not owe the taxes and penalties.

Time to file taxes in 2009...and before doing so I called them to make sure we had a $0 balance on our account. Everything checked out. No balance due. Finally!!!!!

Today we received a check in the mail for $78 saying that they reviewed our 2006 income tax return and we overpaid by $78. I'm not exactly what to say at this point. We've been fighting this for every 3 years and in the end, they gave us more money than we paid them back. It's no wonder our state is having such budget problems when they can't process an amended return correctly and pay out more than they take in.
